Professor Alisoun Milne joins the growing number of Social Science Academicians in the School. She is honoured by this conferment and is particularly delighted to be one of only two Professors of Social Work to be newly appointed Fellows. Alisoun’s research interests are in four intersecting areas: social work with older people and their families; mental health and ageing; family caring; and long term care. She recently published a book entitled ‘Mental Health in Later Life: taking a lifecourse approach’ and is a member of the Research Excellence Framework 2021 sub-panel for Social Work and Social Policy.
Alisoun is also a qualified and registered social worker and specialises in teaching social work with adults on the social work BA and MA programmes. She has a well established national profile including being a member of the Chief Social Worker for Adults Advisory Group, a founding editor of the International Journal of Care and Caring and Co-lead of a national group of social work academics with a special interest in social work with older people. Alisoun is regularly invited to speak at national and international conferences; in November 2019 she was the non-medical keynote speaker at the British Geriatrics Society conference Reclaiming the role of the ‘social’ in the care and support of older people.
