The University has a number of ways of recognising the outstanding performance and contribution of its staff, this year the School is pleased to announce that the following colleagues have received academic promotions:
Jane Reeves and Iain Wilkinson are being promoted to Reader. Heejung Chung, Ben Baumberg, Beth Breeze, Steve Roberts and Joy Zhang are being promoted to Senior Lecturer.
In addition, Joy has been awarded an ESRC Future Leaders grant, Beth has been awarded one of the University’s 50th Anniversary Beacon Projects and an application to the NORFACE Welfare State Futures programme by Heejung and Peter Taylor-Gooby has been recommended for funding.
Through these promotions, the University aims to encourage staff to improve their own performance while meeting nationally and internationally recognised standards of excellence.
Our congratulations are extended to each of our colleagues for receiving this recognition of the quality of their contribution to our School’s teaching and research.

Kent is ranked 20th in the Guardian University Guide 2014 and joint 33rd in the Sunday Times and Times’ Good University Guide League Tables 2014. Top ten rankings were given for Social Policy (6th), Social Work (8th) and Sociology (10th) in the Times’ Good University Guide.
Social Policy and Sociology were also ranked in the top ten of their disciplines nationwide RAE 2008 with 30% of their research output rated as being of a quality that is world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour (4*).
