Communicating Effectively with Vulnerable Children and Young People
Due to the current COVID-19 crisis, we have arranged to run our free 4-week MOOC (Massive Online Open Course) again from Monday 6 July. Read more details on our website and view one of our animations from the course. You can register your place now.
This course will enable you to improve your communication skills through techniques which place the child at the heart of the interaction. You’ll examine why a child may become vulnerable and reflect upon the barriers to communication. You’ll also explore activities from pre-verbal to adolescent stages which encourage children to share their feelings.
What topics will you cover?
- Reasons why a child or young person may become vulnerable
- Age-appropriate activities and techniques from the pre-verbal to adolescent stages
- Innovative ways of facilitating communication
- Challenges and barriers to effective communication with vulnerable children and young people
- Levels of vulnerability experienced by a child or young person, including areas of safeguarding
You can book your place now via Futurelearn

Direct work with children online distance-learning standalone module
A popular follow up from this MOOC, is our Direct Work with Children standalone module.
We are therefore delivering this module from 2 November 2020 to 28 March 2021. Although it is a 10 week module in content, it is studied over 20 weeks. More information on what will be covered is available on our website, along with a link to register your place.
Please note that a pre-requisite to study this module is employment or a voluntary role within a child welfare related organisation. To confirm this, an e-mail from your employer/line-manager would need to be sent to Vanisha Jassal, course tutor, at v.jassal@kent.ac.uk, confirming your role and that you have been DBS checked. If you have any query regarding this, please email Vanisha directly.
We have kept the same low price for this popular course at just £895.
Best wishes
