Successful quantitative research skills summer school

The first Quantitative Group Research Opportunity for Undergraduate Projects (GROUP)  summer school run by Dr Jack Cunliffe has just been completed. This highly successful  two week residential course provided an introduction to quantitative methods for the social sciences for 42  undergraduate students from four academic schools. This project is run via the University’s Q-Step centre based in the School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research.

The summer school offers students a unique opportunity to boost their employability, gaining valuable quantitative skills whilst working alongside students from a range of disciplines in the social sciences and participate in with social events run for the summer school. The course forms a five credit module which will appear on students’ transcripts enabling them to demonstrate the quantitative skills obtained during the programme to future employers.

The module also offers a route for students on single honours bachelor programmes in criminology, sociology, social policy, law or politics and international relations to transfer onto a degree programme including a “with Quantitative Research” (or for business administration “With Business Analytics”) minor. A number of the students who participated in the summer school have already indicated they intend to transfer onto to the minor programmes.
