There is an Alternative! Critical comics and cartoons
The current Templeman Gallery exhibition showcases a selection of original material, reprints, published material and paraphernalia by twenty-two American and British comic artists plus material from the British cartoon and Les Coleman archives., representing two prolific traditions in alternative comics.
The works on display are commonly labelled as alternative in their respective traditions and understood as critically positioning themselves against a given mainstream (whether in comics, politics or culture).
Through the displayed material, and drawing on the position of comics as an underground or marginal form, the exhibition investigates the issue of what it means to be ‘alternative’ and ‘critical’ in contemporary society.
Venue:- Templeman Library, first floor landing
Open – seven days a week 08.00-21.00 or when the building is open
Dates – ends Friday 1st July
