The latest annual Coutts Million Pound Donor Report, produced in association with the University’s Centre for Philanthropy , concludes that philanthropy in the UK is buoyant.
The Coutts Million Pound Donor Report focuses on UK charitable donations worth £1 million or more. It aims to capture and track trends in major giving, including the size of donations above a million pounds, the type of donors making gifts of this size and the causes that are benefiting
The recent report found that higher education proved to be the most popular destination for million pound donations, with universities and other higher education institutions replacing foundations at the top of the popularity table, receiving £570 million, or 42 per cent of the total. Charities working overseas were the second most popular cause, whilst arts and cultural organisations ranked third.
Dr Beth Breeze, Director of the Centre for Philanthropy, said: ‘Donations worth £1 million or more are extremely important for the charities that are lucky enough to receive them, especially in a climate of public sector spending cuts, decreased corporate giving and ordinary donors feeling the pinch.’
