Prof Phil Hubbard, together with Dr Rachela Colosi of Lincoln University, has been awarded £117839 over 12 months by the ESRC to investigate the impacts of lap dance clubs on feelings of safety in British cities at night. This project builds on Prof Hubbard’s previous work on the regulation of prostitution and sex work, and Dr Colosi’s ethnographic investigations of lap dancing, and will be the first study of the ways that the sexualisation of nightlife creates feelings of discomfort among particular social groups. The grant will explore the impact of lap dance clubs on four British cities, and will culminate in a workshop for licensing officers and community safety groups which will be attended by leading licensing solicitors Philip Kolvin QC and Leo Charalambides QC.
