{"id":2529,"date":"2020-06-05T13:37:54","date_gmt":"2020-06-05T12:37:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/spskent\/?p=2529"},"modified":"2020-06-12T10:23:26","modified_gmt":"2020-06-12T09:23:26","slug":"summer-science-reading-listening-and-viewing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/spskent\/2020\/06\/05\/summer-science-reading-listening-and-viewing\/","title":{"rendered":"Summer Science reading, listening and viewing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"lead\">Our Academics give their recommendations for how to get an extra slice of science this summer, with a list of their top books, podcasts and shows. <\/p>\n<h4><strong>Forensic Science<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Our Forensic Science Team have pulled together a list which should include something for everyone&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Something to read &#8211; take some time during lockdown to enjoy some scientific literature with a twist:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When the Dogs Don&#8217;t Bark by Professor Angela Gallop. <em>An incredible story of a life spent in forensic science<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Written in Blood by Mike Silverman <em>As one of the UK\u2019s leading forensic scientists, Mike Silverman has helped to identify and convict dozens of murderers, rapists, armed robbers, burglars and muggers, thanks to the evidence they \u2013 or their victims \u2013 unwittingly left behind at the scenes of their crimes.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Unnatural Causes &#8211; Meet the forensic pathologist, Dr Richard Shepherd. <em>He solves the mysteries of unexplained or sudden death. He has performed over 23,000 autopsies, including some of the most high-profile cases of recent times; the Hungerford Massacre, the Princess Diana inquiry, and 9\/11.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Blooding by Joseph Wambaugh <em>Leicestershire, England, and the slayings of two teenagers, Lynda Mann in 1983, and Dawn Ashworth three years later, killings that were eventually solved through scientist Sir Alec Jeffreys&#8217;s discovery of genetic fingerprinting. Genetic fingerprinting was determined to be fool-proof, and the real culprit, Colin Pitchfork, was identified without question.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>All That Remains: A Life in Death by Prof Dame, Sue Black <em>As a Professor of Anatomy and Forensic Anthropology, she focuses on mortal remains in her lab, at burial sites, at scenes of violence, murder and criminal dismemberment, and when investigating mass fatalities due to war, accident or natural disaster.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Something to listen to<\/strong> <strong>&#8211; There are a number of resources available to watch online based on the book and author incuding a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TevMCyh9Pgk\">Waterstones 5 mins author profile<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=57AzJheixp8\">public lecture<\/a> on forensic anthropology and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9Jrd5kJ-vTU\">lecture<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FgQ_SK3fnWc\">Q and A <\/a>from the Royal Institution on how forensic anthropology helps solves crimes .<\/p>\n<p>The Royal Society of Chemistry have also created <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Z6NappSFwPg\">a video on \u2018day in the life of a forensic scientist&#8217;.<\/a><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Chemistry:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Our Chemistry team identify some reading for lockdown, as well as a show available on iPlayer and YouTube channels.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Something to read:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The New Science of Strong Materials&#8221; by J E Gordon &#8211;\u00a0 <em>beautifully written and very easy to read, and show both how useful simple models are and how they can fail us.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What if?&#8221; by Randall Munroe\u00a0 &#8211; <em>quote its own subtitle, &#8220;Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions&#8221;.\u00a0 Dr Ewan Clark explains that &#8220;this book manages to be both side-splittingly<\/em> <em>funny and the best example I&#8217;ve ever seen on how to analyse problems like a scientist.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Uncle Tungsten&#8221; by Oliver Sacks &#8211; <em>Dr Emma McCabe describes this as &#8220;a popular science book that you might enjoy&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Something to watch &#8211; in case you&#8217;ve exhausted every box set, or just want to try something different.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/iplayer\/episodes\/b00qbq7f\/chemistry-a-volatile-history\">&#8220;Chemistry: a volatile history&#8221;<\/a> on BBC by Jim Al-Khalili<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a style=\"background-color: #ffffff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCFhXFikryT4aFcLkLw2LBLA\">NileRed<\/a> and <a style=\"background-color: #ffffff\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/NurdRage\">NurdRage&#8217;s<\/a> youtube channels provide bite-size chemistry shows.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What if?&#8221; by Randall Munroe &#8211; Check out the one hour <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7GIDDaF26zE\">Google talk<\/a> on the book topics or <a href=\"https:\/\/xkcd.com\/\">take a look at the\u00a0Webcomic<\/a> that lead to book.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>Physics<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Something to read:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Director of Undergraduate studies for Physics, Dr Silvia Ramos, recommends two funny reads &#8211; an oldie and a newbie:<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;We Have No Idea: A Guide to the Unknown Universe&#8221; by Jorge Cham and Daniel Whitesome<\/p>\n<div>&#8220;Surely you are joking, Mr. Feynman&#8221; by R.P.
