As you start to settle in to life at SPS you will come across a number of teams and individuals who are here to help and a list of things that you need to do. To help you find your feet in these first couple of weeks, the SPS Admin Team say hello and share their tips and FAQ’s.
“Welcome to the School of Physical Sciences. You are about to begin one of the most exciting times in your life, and the department is here to help make your University of Kent experience the most positive it can be.
We are a friendly team, ready with a smile, so please don’t be afraid to ring the bell. The counter is open between the hours of 9.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday. Alternatively, you can contact us by email at spsadmin@kent.ac.uk.
You will have had a lot to take in since you arrived, but to help here is our list of the top three things to do now!
1. Make sure you are Registered
Login to the Student Data System (SDS), and click on Registration in the left hand menu. Please check carefully that all your personal details are correct, and when you are happy, please click Register to confirm. We will only communicate updates to and accept enquiries from your University of Kent email address. Attendance at Laboratory classes requires you to be registered for Health and Safety requirements.
2. SMS Text Facility
The text messaging facility is where you will receive information such as Timetabled events that have been rescheduled, cancelled or rooms changed. As this is urgent information sent throughout the year, please do make sure you sign up to our SMS Text Facility as soon as possible.
3. Follow us
Follow our UniKentSPS Facebook Page, Twitter and Instagram account for further updates on news, events and information throughout the year.
If you have any questions, throughout your time here, the Admin team is likely to be your first port of call if you have a question or query. We are the go to people for all kinds of questions, here are just a couple of examples of how we can help. But please feel free to ask us anything… however big or small we promise to try our best to find the answer… or find the person that can!
Q: How do I make an absence request?
A: Any type of request (concession) is done via Faramir, using the following link https://faramir.kent.ac.uk/student/concessions/default.aspx here you will find help and guidance with each type of concession and how to apply for a concession appropriate to your absence.
Q: I need to meet with my academic advisor?
A: Unfortunately, we do not have access to the individual academics timetable, so please email them directly, and they will get back to you.
Q: My assessment needs to be handed in via the Supervision Box…where is it?
A: The Supervision Box is located in the Student Room, in the Ingram Building
Q: I have lost my Student ID Card. What do I do?
A: The current cost of replacing a Student ID Card is £15.00 – issued by Central Student Administration (please see the link below)
https://www.kent.ac.uk/csao/student-service/id.html
Q: I would like to talk to someone about how I am feeling
A: We have a wonderful team who are responsible for our students support and wellbeing. Please feel free to email spssupport@kent.ac.uk. You can also contact the Student Support Office and request an appointment with Christine Vickerman.
If you call in at the admin office you’ll also notice our information screens which display important information such as news, events and upcoming deadlines. These may help answer any other questions you may have, as well as keeping you updated about what’s going on in the School.
Once again, we wish you every success in your chosen Programme of Study and remember, we are here to help.”
