Innovation Bootcamp prepares postgraduate science students for onward careers

By Nikki Gregory | 24 March 2022

Postgraduate students from the University’s Division of Natural Sciences developed their understanding of the key entrepreneurial elements required to build a start-up in the science sector at Discovery Park in Sandwich this week (1-3 March).

At a three-day Innovation Bootcamp, Kent students and staff heard from senior leaders at Discovery Park and from companies including Venomtech, Virology, and VisusNano who shared insights into the importance of teamwork when building a start-up, what investors are looking for and how to write a convincing and purposeful business plan.

Students also took part in a series of interactive workshops designed to develop their knowledge of the scientific start-up community and knowledge exchange and innovation activities such as protecting technical inventions.

The Bootcamp initiative was led by Dr Stefano Biagini, Dr Chris Serpell, Dr Stuart Gibson, and Dr Rob Barker supported by Simon Barnes, Debra Sowrey and Charlotte Siliafis from Kent’s Research Innovation team. The Discovery Park team were introduced by Dr Naz Bashir (Evolutia Venture Partners) and led by Jane Kennedy (Business Officer), Dr Martino Picardo (Chairman) and were supported by Scarlet Atkins (Events Manager).
