Meet Your Institute of Physics (IOP) Campus Ambassador at Kent

The Institute of Physics Ambassador, Diandra introduces herself to students studying Physics at the University of Kent

Institute of Physics Ambassador Diandra Beckles

Hi, everyone! My name is Diandra and I am your IOP Campus Ambassador for this academic year. I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself and let you know about some of the outstanding help IOP can provide with both university and career goals.

The Institute of Physics is a network of education and industry professionals from a wide range of sectors looking to create an inclusive community environment for physicists. From nuclear to astrophysics, there are many groups that members can join in order to gain the most recent updates in research and development. Throughout the year, IOP holds a variety of conferences, online training and career development events that can boost any CV and provide networking opportunities.

I, myself, attended the Conference for Women in Physics early this year. The event, often held at Oxford University, had guest speakers including Joyce Bell Burnell (Pulsars 1974), Daniella Bortoletto (Higgs Boson, CERN) and Petra Rudolf (Pres., European Physics Society). The conference provided a unique opportunity to engage with a diverse range of students from all over the country, as well as discuss summer internships and career goals with successful professionals. The conference also included excursions to the AMRC and Plasma Institute, alongside development workshops in diversity, journalism and medical training.

Due to COVID-19 lockdown restriction, I have had to hold off on some events planned for this semester. I do hope to bring these forward into 2021 and give us all a chance to celebrate the physics community here at Kent.
