As part of our ‘Meet the Society’ series, find out more about Space Soc and meet the committee.
As you can imagine from the name of our society, we are passionate about all things to do with space! Whether you are a die-hard space nerd who has been observing for years or someone who thinks space is awesome (we do too!) you have a home in the Space Society!
We have the privilege of our very own society telescope and provide several opportunities for you to learn how to work it yourself. When fully trained, you can gain access to the keys to the dome which will allow you to take your fill of observing whenever you want.
During the year we hope to hold many observing nights with and without the telescope to help you better understand the skies, timing some around cool astronomical events (British weather dependent of course). Sadly, our famous (at least to us!) pub crawls may not be able to run yet, but we have plenty of other things in store! Quiz nights, various competitions (maybe prizes), talks from academics (if we ask very nicely), industry and career talks, movie nights, and the aforementioned telescope nights.
A whole host of activities are in the works and will run based on the circumstances, but rest assured that the SpaceSoc community will be active no matter what! We are always happy to receive questions or offer the support that we can, feel free to contact us through the social media channels.
Finally, a collection of small introductions by each member of the committee which hopefully show space really is for everyone!
Hello, my name is Jake and I am the President of the society!
I have been doing astronomy for over 4 years now as a hobby, but I am now studying my passion as well! I am the proud father of 4 telescopes and a microscope (all named) which have taken over my house! I also enjoy reading and writing – especially regarding the history of science and space travel! I cannot wait to meet you all throughout the year to come!
Hi everyone! My name is Emily and I’m the Vice President this year!
I am an aspiring pilot and astronaut, and in my spare time I enjoy painting and embroidering! A couple of fun facts about me: I once went snorkelling with sharks, and I completed a solo parachute jump!
Hey, I’m Ody the Treasurer, and I’m a hella nerd!
I’m into Marvel, anything to do with space, Harry Potter, gaming, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Star Trek, and anything else that makes you think of those signature big black glasses. I love dancing, arts and crafts (just drawing is boring), baking, and reading. My favourite space quote: “Space is for everybody. It’s not just for a few people in science or math, or for a select group of astronauts. That’s our new frontier out there, and it’s everybody’s business to know about space.” – Christa McAuliffe, 1985.
Hello! I’m Amber, the Social Secretary this year!
You’ll usually find me haunting Templeman Library at 4am with a cup of coffee and my planner or ignoring the world with my headphones in – but I promise I am not as scary as sleepdeprived me might seem! I enjoy reading mostly crime or Tudor related books (but really anything that catches my eye), solo gaming, crosswords (yes, really), hiking with friends, and having a mild existential crisis as I stare into the depths of the cosmos. I’m looking forward to developing our community and inspiring a passion for space in everyone!
What’s up everyone! My name is Thomas (Tom for short) and I am the society Telescope Officer for this year!
I have been studying the stars in my own time for over 5 years now and have seen many celestial wonders from star clusters to comets. I have other activities outside of astronomy that I am fond of including mountain biking, hiking, gaming, and Dungeons and Dragons to name a few! I look forward to meeting you all in the autumn and teaching you how to use the campus telescope!
We look forward to nurturing your space obsession when you join in September! Social Media: Facebook: @UKCSpace Instagram: @UKCSpace
