Meet our new BAME Rep: Stefania Bormetti

As part of ongoing work to build the SPS Community, and following student feedback, we have introduced a new Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Rep in the School. Stefania tells us about why she’s excited to take on this new role, and her plans for the future.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself – what you’re studying, why you came to Kent and what your plans are for the future?

I am currently studying chemistry and I decided to come to Kent because when I visited the university, I had the pleasure of meeting some of the lectures and lab technicians which made me feel extremely welcome and eager to learn. In the future I would like to become a scientist and do research.

Why do you think this new BAME Rep role is important?

I believe this role is important because in order to make changes going forward, the BAME community needs to be listened, included and taken into consideration when it comes to decisions.

Why are you interested in this role?

I am interested in this role because I know what it feels like. I want to help other people who feel invisible and isolated from the rest of the class/Uni/life. I want to make a change on how the BAME community is made out to be seen.

What would you hope to achieve in this role?

  • Higher overall grades in the BAME community.
  • Overall increase of attendance to lectures.
  • Have more talks where BAME scientists are invited.
  • Overall increase in mental health.

How do you hope to engage and support other BAME students in SPS?

I believe a support group should be set up where people are free to express their feelings and are helped in finding a solution, not only mentally but academically as well.

I have also spoke to some of the people in my class and they have said that they would like more POC councillors at the well-being offices.

Welcome to the role Stefania! We hope students find this new role useful and it helps them feel more engaged with the SPS community.

We are looking for one more BAME Rep to work with Stefania, as well as two International Reps. If you are interested in applying, please email spsmarketing@kent.ac.uk for more information.
