Every year, 50 students from across the UK (and beyond) gather in Canterbury for Kent Space School and this year is no different.
Kent Space School is an annual three day residential held in Canterbury at the University of Kent. It’s a chance for students aged 15-18 to immerse themselves in the astronomy, space science and astrophysics research going on at Kent, while also getting hands on with some exciting space activities.
Across the three days from 7-9 August 2020, attendees will take part in an action packed programme. You’ll be able to design, build and launch your own solid-fuel rockets using rocket simulator software to try and successfully complete the rocket challenge. You can also expect exciting talks from academics at the university.
The evenings will be spent observing at the university’s state of the art Beacon Observatory, hopefully with a star-studded show by the Perseids Meteor shower, set to peak close to the weekend. Our resident astronomers and local astronomy groups will be on hand with their expertise to answer any questions and show you some wonders of the night sky!
Attendees will also get a chance to experience some of the research going on at the university with short projects run by some of our PhD students. In past years these have included identifying exoplanets using data from the Beacon Observatory, investigating impacts from space objects on spacecraft, identifying meteorites and more!
Each year academics, researchers, students and alumni from the School of Physical Sciences come together to bring Kent Space School to life. Across the weekend, attendees will have the chance to get stuck in to all aspects of life as a space scientist as well as meet other students your age with an interest in space.
So if you want to launch your summer out of this world, come and join us by booking your space here.
