To help you settle into life at Kent, we will be running a series of School focused events for Postgraduate students as part of Kent’s Welcome Week. This week, between 16-20 September, is a fantastic opportunity to meet other new students, familiarise yourself with the school and wider university as well as meet the academics who will be teaching and supporting you.
For those of you who are new to SPS and Kent – congratulations on securing your place here and welcome!
This blog post focuses on the events for postgraduate students – check out our post on Undergraduate Welcome Week for information about UG events.
We encourage you to attend all of the events applicable to your course, in particular the Welcome to PG Research at Kent Talk, School BBQ and Icebreakers on Tuesday 17 September. These events will give you the chance to meet some of our staff and fellow PG students – including current ones.
Look out for your Welcome to SPS pack in the post, which will include your personalised timetable – as well as your raffle ticket for our hoody prize draw.
If you don’t receive a raffle ticket please let us know so we can still enter you into the draw. We will have spare copies of all timetables at the Student Office Counter in the Ingram foyer if you need another one, or email spsmarketing@kent.ac.uk and we can send you a copy.
There are some course specific events, as well as different events for taught or research Masters students – but here is a summary of wider PG events:

Tuesday 17 September
09:30 – 12:00: Postgraduate Information Fair (Darwin Conference Suite)
11:00 – 12:30: Postgraduate Icebreakers (Jennison Lecture Theatre)
12:30 – 14:00: Welcome to SPS BBQ (Outside Stacey building)
13:40 – 16:40: Hello Library and IT sessions for PG students – book on for a 20 minute course
Thursday 19 September
09:00 – 10:30: Unconscious Bias Training (Ingram Lecture Theatre)
11:00 – 13:00: Autism Awareness training (Ingram Lecture Theatre)
14:00 – 16:00: Mental Health First Aid course (Ingram Lecture Theatre)
Friday 20 September
10:00 – 17:00: Postgraduate Research Symposium for all PGR students (Room 110, Ingram Building)
After Welcome week, we will continue to hold events for PG students, such as our PG networking sessions – keep an eye on your email for more information about these. The Library team is also holding sessions especially for PGR students on Wednesday 25 September. These will cover with topics such as the support they can offer with setting up a search strategy, managing your bibliographic references and doing a literature review. You can find out more and book a place now.
