To help you settle into life at Kent, we will be running a series of School focused events as part of Kent’s Welcome Week. This week, between 16-20 September, is a fantastic opportunity to meet other new students, familiarise yourself with the school and wider university as well as meet the academics who will be teaching and supporting you.
For those of you who are new to SPS and Kent – congratulations on securing your place here and welcome!
This blog post focuses on the events for undergraduate students – check out our post on Postgraduate Welcome Week for information about PG events.
We encourage you to attend all of the events applicable to your course, in particular the Welcome to SPS Talk, School BBQ and Icebreakers on Tuesday 17 September. These events will give you the chance to meet some of our staff and your academic advisor, as well as hearing from an existing student on how to get the most out of Welcome Week and beyond.
As well as course and stage specific events (such as foundation courses), there are a number of events for the whole school.
Look out for your Welcome to SPS pack in the post, which will include your personalised timetable – as well as your raffle ticket for our hoody prize draw.
If you don’t receive a raffle ticket please let us know so we can still enter you into the draw. We will have spare copies of all timetables at the Student Office Counter in the Ingram foyer if you need another one, or email spsmarketing@kent.ac.uk and we can send you a copy. There are a number of course and stage specific events – including lab safety inductions which must be completed before term starts – but here is a summary of wider whole school events:

10:00 – 11:00: Welcome to SPS Talk (Woolf Lecture Theatre 1)
11:00 – 12:30: Icebreaker sessions for all new students:
- Chemistry and Forensics Foundation – Ingram Lecture Theatre
- Physics Foundation – Ingram Building 110
- Chemistry and Forensics Stage 1 – Chipperfield Lecture Theatre
- Physics Foundation –Grimond Lecture Theatre 1
13:30 – 15:00: Welcome Talk and Global Hangout for International Students: Colyer-Fergusson Building
Wednesday 18 September
15:00 – 16:30: Unconscious Bias Training – Sibson Lecture Theatre 3
Thursday 19 September
11:00 – 16:00: Welcome Fair: Student Union, Mandela Building
14:00 – 16:20: Library and IT inductions. These 20 minute sessions are split into groups, ordered by surname :
14:00 – for students with surnames A-C
14:20 – for students with surnames D-F
14:40 – for students with surnames G-K
15:00 – for students with surnames L-N
15:20 – for students with surnames O-R
15:40 – for students with surnames S – U
16:00 – for students with surnames V- Z
