{"id":4796,"date":"2025-06-10T10:08:33","date_gmt":"2025-06-10T09:08:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/specialcollections\/?p=4796"},"modified":"2025-06-16T11:52:21","modified_gmt":"2025-06-16T10:52:21","slug":"laughter-in-the-long-twentieth-century-exhibition-and-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/specialcollections\/2025\/06\/10\/laughter-in-the-long-twentieth-century-exhibition-and-event\/","title":{"rendered":"Laughter in the Long Twentieth Century &#8211; exhibition and event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The British Cartoon Archive at the University of Kent invites you to join us for our workshop, entitled\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Laughter in the Long Twentieth Century <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">that explores cartoons through the lens of fascism and queerness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Date:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> 1 July 2025<br \/>\n<\/span><b>Time:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> 1pm &#8211; 4pm<br \/>\n<\/span><b>Location: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Available both in person (University of Kent, Templeman Lecture Theatre)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and online via MS Teams<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This event will feature two guest speakers who will explore the ways in which cartoons have served as tools of resistance and reflection over the course of the long twentieth century.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Harriet Earle, Senior Lecturer at\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shu.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-people\/staff-profiles\/harriet-earle#firstSection\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sheffield Hallam University<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Her research \u00a0focuses on representations of conflict and trauma in visual culture, especially comics. Her work explores conflict and violence and how this helps to understand PTSD and trauma.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">David Shenton, cartoonist, specializes in queer comics. Shenton is known for his work \u201cControlled Hysteria,\u201d\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stanley and The Mask of Mystery,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Phobia Phobia.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0His comic strips have been featured in the collections\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Strip_AIDS\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Strips Aids<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/No_Straight_Lines\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">No Straight Lines<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/AARGH_(Artists_Against_Rampant_Government_Homophobia)\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">AARGH<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For those able to attend in person, there is a tour of the exhibition\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Laughter in the Twentieth Long Century\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">after the workshop. The exhibition explores cartoons created in the long twentieth century with focus on the interwar period and the decades that followed.
