{"id":1661,"date":"2013-05-16T10:29:12","date_gmt":"2013-05-16T09:29:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/specialcollections\/?p=1661"},"modified":"2013-05-16T10:29:12","modified_gmt":"2013-05-16T09:29:12","slug":"women-and-warfare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/specialcollections\/2013\/05\/16\/women-and-warfare\/","title":{"rendered":"Women and warfare"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A couple of days ago, on Tuesday 14 May, we were delighted to host the launch of the new Templeman exhibition, <strong>Wild Woman to New Woman: Sex and Suffrage on the Victorian Stage<\/strong>.This has been curated by Alyson Hunt and brings together the <strong>Mary Braddon Collection<\/strong> of Canterbury Christ Church University, costumes from the <strong>Gulbenkian costume store<\/strong> and parts of our own <strong>Victorian and Edwardian Theatre Collections<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UoKSpecialColls\/status\/334385114974920704\/photo\/1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1664\" alt=\"wildwomen1\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/specialcollections\/files\/2013\/05\/wildwomen1-300x218.jpg\" width=\"251\" height=\"186\" \/><\/a>The launch was started with a lecture by <strong>Professor Kate Newey<\/strong> from the University of Exeter, who spoke about the subtle protest in suffragette parlour dramas and the deliberate inversion of the female stereotype by campaigners for womens emancipation. The event then moved to the gallery space in the Templeman Library, where everyone enjoyed this rare opportunity to see such different collections side by side.<\/p>\n<p>In the course of preparing for this exhibition, Alyson discovered a few <strong>treasures<\/strong> in our own archives &#8211; such as a copy of <a title=\"Catalogue record for this item\" href=\"https:\/\/catalogue.kent.ac.uk\/Record\/463764\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Ibsen and the Actress<\/em><\/a> inscribed to George Bernard Shaw by playwright, actress and activist Elizabeth Robins, as well as Robins&#8217; own, annotated copy of <a title=\"Catalogue record for this item\" href=\"https:\/\/catalogue.kent.ac.uk\/Record\/434154\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Both Sides of the Curtain<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UoKSpecialColls\/status\/333967343644454912\/photo\/1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1665 alignright\" alt=\"wildwomen2\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/specialcollections\/files\/2013\/05\/wildwomen2-300x224.jpg\" width=\"241\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a>This <a title=\"More information about the exhibition\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/news\/stories\/Victorianexhibition\/2013\" target=\"_blank\">exhibition<\/a> really is an intriguing and entertaining look at the way in which perceptions of women and society as a whole were being challenged a century ago and is only on until <strong>31st May<\/strong>, so please do come and have a look around when you&#8217;re next in the <strong>Templeman<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/specialcollections\/files\/2013\/05\/HB-lecture-pub001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1668\" alt=\"HB lecture pub001\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/specialcollections\/files\/2013\/05\/HB-lecture-pub001-209x300.jpg\" width=\"209\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/specialcollections\/files\/2013\/05\/HB-lecture-pub001-209x300.jpg 209w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/specialcollections\/files\/2013\/05\/HB-lecture-pub001-714x1024.jpg 714w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 209px) 100vw, 209px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Not content with supporting this new exhibition, Special Collections also has the last in its annual series of <a title=\"More information about the lecture\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/library\/collections\/lectures\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">lectures next <strong>Thursday, 23 May<\/strong><\/a>. Keeping the theatrical theme, our focus changes as <strong>Dr Helen Brooks<\/strong> discusses <strong>Theatre of the Great War<\/strong> <strong>(1914-1918)<\/strong>, her initial findings in a research project which will span the centenary of World War One. Much of Helen&#8217;s work thus far has focussed on our very own <a title=\"Information about the Melville Collection\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/library\/specialcollections\/theatre\/melville\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Melville Collection<\/strong><\/a>, looking at rarely used and sadly undiscovered materials. Do join us to find out more!<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The talk will start at 6pm, with refreshments provided from 5.30 in the Templeman Library, TR201.
