We thought this would be a\u00a0fantastic opportunities\u00a0to introduce you to your SOH Head of School\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/english\/people\/86\/dustagheer-sarah\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dr Sarah Dustagheer<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Take a look at the interview below to find out more about Sarah and their role at Kent. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Can you tell us a bit about your journey to becoming Head of School?<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Yes, I really worked my way up from Alumni Officer, Student Experience Lead, Director of Recruitment, Deputy Head and then Head of School! It has been great seeing different sides of how the University functions and supporting students in a variety of ways.<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What are your top priorities for the school this academic year and why?<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Well,\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0still a \u2018young\u2019 School in many ways \u2013 Classics, English and History have only been the School of Humanities since 2023 \u2013 so we are keen always to improve our connection as a group of exciting subjects with lots of synergies. As ever,\u00a0a big part of this is ensuring our students are well-supported, both pastorally and academically, and welcomed to our thriving and lively academic community.<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What are you most proud of in your school, and are there any specific achievements?<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">We had some lovely achievements in our NSS\u00a0(National Student Survey)\u00a0scores this year, with comments from students about how much they have enjoyed their time with us.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0always brilliant for us to hear. We are also a dynamic group of researchers and a wonderful achievement in the last Research Excellence Framework was History\u2019s\u00a0recognition as the top department in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What is the one thing that students might be surprised to learn about you?<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">Perhaps that I\u00a0am someone who is\u00a0a neurodiverse mum to a neurodiverse child \u2013 so I really do understand some of those experiences and pressures some of our students feel and\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0always keen to hear from and support neurodiverse students in any way I can.<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What&#8217;s\u00a0your favourite spot on campus and why?<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">I\u2019m all about Rutherford Dining Hall \u2013 my first office was nearby when I joined Kent,\u00a0so it feels like home. Great food and views of the Cathedral \u2013 see you there!<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Is there a student success story that has inspired you in your career as Head of School?<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">I\u2019m inspired by our students all the time \u2013 I can think of many examples of students who have faced significant personal challenges during their degree and have had the courage to speak up and get support and gone on to thrive. It has been a privilege to watch them shine.<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What one piece of advice would you give students during their time at\u00a0University\u00a0to maximise their academic success this year?<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">I think it is\u00a0really important\u00a0to develop\u00a0self-compassion\u00a0and kindness \u2013 we all have an inner critic or imposter who wants to tell us that we are not good enough.\u00a0Don\u2019t\u00a0listen to them! Remember to be your own cheerleader, and if you need help with this reach out to\u00a0family, friends and especially your seminar leaders and lecturers.
