{"id":177,"date":"2023-05-19T13:08:54","date_gmt":"2023-05-19T12:08:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sociologistinresidence\/?p=177"},"modified":"2023-05-21T15:34:33","modified_gmt":"2023-05-21T14:34:33","slug":"setting-up-the-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sociologistinresidence\/2023\/05\/19\/setting-up-the-workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"Making maps and music"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left\">The <em><strong>Re-drawing the Map<\/strong><\/em> and <strong><em>Re-sounding Margate<\/em><\/strong> workshops (20-21 May 2023) are a collaborative effort between me, the Sociologist-in-Residence, and the Sound, Art, Society students.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop is for Margate residents and visitors to think about the ways we navigate the town and re-draw the map from our own perspectives &#8211; based on the principles of &#8216;counter-mapping&#8217; as a method of re-thinking space, ownership and lived experience. It&#8217;s about the routes we take, the places we go and the places we don&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Setting up \/ how it works<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>STEP 1:<\/strong> The public come in for a map-making workshop, with various prompts and questions to help spark ideas and meanings.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-175 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sociologistinresidence\/files\/2023\/05\/WhatsApp-Image-2023-05-19-at-11.54.56-AM.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"318\" height=\"239\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>STEP 2:<\/strong> The annotated drawings on transparent acetate are either hung up among some prompts or put on display on the overhead projector. Maps can be overlaid on the projection to show patterns.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-178 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sociologistinresidence\/files\/2023\/05\/IMG20230519112104.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"354\" height=\"266\" \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-179 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/sociologistinresidence\/files\/2023\/05\/IMG20230519112141.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"198\" height=\"264\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>STEP 3:<\/strong> The drawing process is also captured on a webcam and the video is streamed into the auditorium (on to a 1980s TV &#8211;
