Student Spotlight | Noorfaqihah Binti Zulghafir – BSc Actuarial Science

Noorfaqihah shares her experiences studying BSc Actuarial Science at the University of Kent, Canterbury.

Why did you choose to study at the University of Kent?

Back in Malaysia, the University of Kent is famous for being among the top actuarial science schools in the UK and I did not want to miss a chance to gain knowledge from the best.

What is the best thing about studying in the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science?

The best thing about the School is being able to gain knowledge from actuarial science lecturers who have already been in the industry for many years. All of them are very supportive in helping students to comprehend especially hard topics, and they are very dedicated to making every class experience better.

What has been your favourite topic/module on your course?

Mathematical Statistics has been my favourite module so far because it is challenging and at the same time, satisfying, especially when solving difficult questions.

What have you found most interesting on your course?

I never thought that I would find the logic in mathematics but the lecturers helped me to understand the story behind the complex equations rather than just blindly memorising formulas. It is a satisfaction that every student craves!

Have you found the School to be supportive? If so, how has the School supported you?

Yes, I found the School to be supportive. I really like the study spaces in Sibson which encourage group study and the friendly receptionists. The lecturers use the latest technology in their teaching, and it’s useful getting email reminders about events.

What do you think of the Sibson Building? What do you think the Building means for students within the School?

Out of the many classes I’ve been in around the campus, Sibson has got to be my favourite because it offers the best facilities. The Canterbury campus is huge, and having our own ‘SMSAS Building’ at the campus means a lot to everyone in the School. It’s a place for students with similar interests to come together and share knowledge and experience with each other. It feels just like home to me.

Can you sum up your course in three words?

Challenging. Fun. Mystery.

Would you recommend studying at Kent?

Yes! Kent offers a wide range of opportunities from enhancing employability skills to self-improvement skills by hosting many events like the Careers and Employability Fair and Volunteering Fair. Basically, there’s never a dull week at Kent!
