Student Spotlight | Cheng Hong Lim – BSc Actuarial Science

Cheng shares his experiences studying BSc Actuarial Science at the University of Kent, Canterbury.

Why did you choose to study at the University of Kent?

I chose to study at the University of Kent because I was looking for a university with a campus near London and heard that Kent hires experienced lecturers with industry experience to teach Actuarial Science. I also decided to come to Kent because I was awarded the Academic Excellence Scholarship.

What is the best thing about studying in the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science?

The best thing about studying in the School is having challenging questions and problems to solve.

What has been your favourite topic/module on your course?

Business Economics has been my favourite topic so far.

What have you found most interesting on your course?

I have found the presentation for the statistics module in my first year one of the most interesting parts of my course so far. We were given a lot of data and were asked to come out with our own topic and research it.

I also really love the connection between my course and the real world / the application of what I have learnt in the real world.

Have you found the School to be supportive? If so, how has the School supported you?

Yes! The lecturers are very supportive and friendly. I often look for them even outside of their office hours.

What do you think of the Sibson Building? What do you think the Building means for students within the School?

Sibson is huge, modern and spacious. It’s a second home for me as an Actuarial Science student, because I spend almost half of my time here. I particularly like the Bloomberg Suite where I receive full access to the Bloomberg Terminal. The Bloomberg Terminal has always been a useful source to get various financial information for me.

Can you sum up your course in three words?

Keep solving puzzles!

Would you recommend studying at Kent?

I would definitely recommend studying at Kent.
