{"id":311,"date":"2016-01-18T11:12:59","date_gmt":"2016-01-18T11:12:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/smsasnews\/?p=311"},"modified":"2019-01-09T15:07:28","modified_gmt":"2019-01-09T15:07:28","slug":"total-positivity-a-bridge-between-representation-theory-and-physics-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/smsasnews\/total-positivity-a-bridge-between-representation-theory-and-physics-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"Total Positivity: a bridge between Representation Theory and Physics conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0conference \u201cTotal Positivity: a bridge between Representation Theory and Physics\u201d held \u00a0at the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science\u00a07-12 January, brought together\u00a0over 50 researchers\u00a0from\u00a0diverse areas,\u00a0such as\u00a0algebra, integrable systems and mathematical physics.\u00a0 They came from the USA, France, Germany and across the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Nima Arkani-Hamed \u00a0\u00a0(Institute for Advanced Studies, Princeton) and Professor Lauren Williams (Berkeley),\u00a0each\u00a0delivered a lecture\u00a0series. \u00a0Professor Arkani-Hamed is\u00a0one of the world&#8217;s leading theoretical physicists and was the inaugural winner of the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics. He\u00a0presented his work\u00a0on the interactions between Total Positivity, a phenomenon\u00a0that arises\u00a0in diverse areas of pure mathematics, \u00a0and scattering amplitudes in physics.
