{"id":2124,"date":"2023-02-21T13:25:05","date_gmt":"2023-02-21T13:25:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/smsasnews\/?p=2124"},"modified":"2023-02-27T15:46:58","modified_gmt":"2023-02-27T15:46:58","slug":"levelling-up-maths-for-black-heritage-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/smsasnews\/levelling-up-maths-for-black-heritage-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Levelling Up: Maths\u202ffor Black heritage students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science is delighted to be one of only five UK maths departments taking part in a new university access programme called\u202fLevelling Up: Maths\u202ffor Black heritage students. \u202fThe programme \u2013 a collaboration between learned societies, educational charities and organisations across STEM and the Black community \u2013 aims to address the underrepresentation of Black heritage students in STEM subjects at universities across the UK.<\/p>\n<p>The programme is open to students currently in Year 12 and studying A level Maths. Participants will join our launch event on the Canterbury campus on Saturday 20th May, where they will have the opportunity to meet their mentors in person and take part in workshops at the University. Students will then take part in online tutorials with their mentors, on a fortnightly basis on Wednesdays from 5pm \u2013 6.30pm. These will run throughout the year up until the A level examinations in June 2024. The sessions will cover academic content but students will also receive support with their university applications.<\/p>\n<p>There is no cost to schools or students to participate.
