Professor of Mathematics, Professor Elizabeth Mansfield<\/a>, from the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science<\/a> (SMSAS) at the University of Kent will give the\u00a0inaugural Noether Public Lecture<\/a> `On the Nature of Mathematical Joy\u2019 on Monday 15 July.<\/p>\n

The free talk will start at 6pm in\u00a0Lecture Theatre 3<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0Sibson Building<\/a>\u00a0at the University of Kent\u2019s Canterbury Campus with refreshments available from 5.30pm in the Sibson Atrium.<\/p>\n

Professor Elizabeth Mansfield joined the University of Kent in 1995 and was the first female mathematician to progress to Professor of Mathematics at the University of Kent. She is the past vice-president of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications<\/a> (IMA) and has served on the Council of the London Mathematical Society<\/a> (LMS). Her current research interests are interdisciplinary and are related to symmetry. Professor Mansfield was recently a guest on the BBC Radio 4 show In Our Time<\/a>, where she discussed Emmy Noether\u2019s life and achievements.<\/p>\n

In the talk, Professor Mansfield will discuss the nature of mathematical joy.<\/p>\n
