Over the summer the School supported four Nuffield placement students from local schools. For the month of August these students works with Dr Steffen Krusch and Dr Joe Watkins on a number of projects including maths and music, perceptions of the golden ratio, and Sturm-Louiville problems. During their time with the School, the students had the opportunity to design their own experiments and produce project reports. In one case, some of this work has helped to modify the session materials the School uses during Outreach events.
Following the placement, the students have gone on to receive Gold CREST Awards for their research efforts. One of the students commented, “I thoroughly enjoyed my Nuffield placement! It was an amazing opportunity to gain an insight into what real mathematical research is like and I would recommend it to everyone.”
