On 14th July we tackled our largest ever Outreach event in a primary school, involving all 240 pupils and staff at Vale View Community School in Dover in an investigation into the relationship between height and shoe size. This was part of a week-long programme of activities bringing science and maths to life and supported their day of activities on the theme ‘All about me’.
Once Year 6 had taken part in the investigation, they then split into small groups to lead the investigation and the data collection exercise with the remaining classes in the school – they were very enthusiastic advocates of an investigation supported by data. The life-size scatter diagram, with data points distinguished by class colour, was displayed proudly in the School Hall.
Year 6 then continued to use graphical representations to investigate different aspects of the relationships between height, shoe size, eye- and hair-colour and to draw their own conclusions about the rate at which children grow.
This event was run by Alexa Laurence and Diana Cole, supported by Freyja Bills, an SMSAS Ambassador.
