Dr Eleni Matechou, Senior Lecturer in Statistics, and Dr Bruno Santos, Lecturer in Statistics at the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science, have been awarded £24,607 by the Swedish Research Council for their project Over-coverage in population registers: determinants and potential bias.

Over-coverage in population registers – that is, individuals in the register whose death is not registered or who moved out of the country without notifying relevant authorities – can have serious consequences for policy making.

The project, led by Eleni and Bruno, aims to develop statistical models to account for over-coverage and therefore provide reliable estimates of the number of individuals present in Sweden in any given year.
