On Monday 8 February,  Dr Melania Nica, Lecturer in Actuarial Science at the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science delivered a virtual talk on negative interest rates to a group of Russian actuaries.

The talk was organised by MSc Applied Actuarial Science student Dr Diana Zriacheva, and was attended by over 40 actuaries from Russia, employed in a variety of actuarial roles in insurance companies and pension funds, among others. Diana organised this talk because she wanted to inform the participants about studying at the University of Kent and of the great opportunities it offers for an international career.

Although there is much interest among actuaries in Russia to obtain international exposure, connections and qualifications, Diana found that actuaries from Russia were underrepresented when she came to Kent as a student. The talk covered the topical concerns about negative interest rates, including their emergence, sustainability, and impact on investments.
