Communicating uncertainty without losing trust | Public Lecture

One of the country’s leading experts on statistics is set to deliver a talk exploring how we can communicate truth when emotional responses appear to trump balanced consideration of evidence.

The free talk by Professor Sir David Spiegelhalter will take place on Thursday 1 November at 6pm in Lecture Theatre 3 in the Sibson Building at the University of Kent’s Canterbury Campus.

Professor Spiegelhalter is current president of the Royal Statistical Society, and Winton Professor of the Public Understanding of Risk in the Statistical Laboratory at the University of Cambridge. He is well known to viewers of BBC Four for the documentary Tails You Win: The Science of Chance.

In the talk hosted by the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science (SMSAS) and East Kent Royal Statistical Society Group, Professor Spiegelhalter will discuss how deep uncertainty about facts, numbers, or scientific hypotheses needs to be communicated without losing trust and credibility.
