From 7th – 8th July, SMSAS participated in an Outreach event at Simon Langton Girls School. This was run in collaboration with EBP Kent, a local organizer of many development activities for local Secondary Schools.
Our session was titled ‘Design a Virus’ and was run with two groups of Key Stage 4 students. The activities involved building a model virus using Euler’s formula, studying contagion using network flow diagrams and then modeling infection rates using basic difference equations.
The session on the 7th was run by Joe Watkins, with the session on the 8th being run by Freyja Bills; a Stage 1 Ambassador who was leading this workshop for the first time. The feedback was very positive, with one student saying that it was her ‘best day ever in education.’ The Headteacher spoke warmly about Freyja’s work leading her session, noting that she did a great job of motivating the students to understand some of the more challenging material.
We will be doing more work with Simon Langton’s Girls School in the future.
As always, if you would like to be involved with this, or our other Outreach work, then please contact Joe Watkins (J.Watkins@kent.ac.uk)
