Influential Professor of Mathematics to Receive Honorary Degree from Kent

Professor Mark Ablowitz from the University of Colorado, Boulder, will collect and Honorary Degree from the University of Kent on Thursday 19 July, alongside graduating students from the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science (SMSAS).

Mark is a Professor of Applied Mathematics whose research is centred on the solutions of nonlinear differential equations, principally equations with applications in nonlinear waves and fibre optics. He is particularly well-known for his work on solitons and the inverse scattering transform.

Mark’s impressive CV included being named as a Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) Fellow in 2011 and an American Mathematical Society (AMS) Fellow in 2012 amongst other notable accolades.

His work on nonlinear systems has had considerable influence on the research carried out by academic staff in SMSAS, including Professor Andy Hone, Professor Peter Clarkson, Professor Jing Ping Wang and others.

Mark’s oration will be given by Professor Peter Clarkson.
