On June 22nd, SMSAS held an Outreach event for local Year 12 students titled ‘Cutting Edge Mathematics’. Attending mainly from local selective and independent schools, around 80 students attended a mixture of sessions which were inspired by contemporary research at the University of Kent.
Delivered by Lecturers, PhD students and student Ambassadors, the featured sessions covered Solitons and Skyrmions, Cauchon Diagrams, Statistics and Ecology and an Introduction to Behavioural Finance. Two of these sessions were also featured in the CPD event, which was held earlier in the year and was attended by many of the same teachers.
The feedback from the day was very good, with strong praise about the fun and interactivity of the sessions and how the staff were friendly, helpful and approachable. We thank Will Carpenter, Rachel Gregory, Anita Jeyam and Brendan Nolan for leading sessions on the day and Phil Adey, Freyja Bills, John Lubi and Patrick Ryan for supporting the event. Jenny Ashcroft and Mareike Haberichter also offered valuable input into the session on Solitons and Skyrmions.
We will be hosting similar such days in the future so please contact Joe Watkins if you’d like to be involved
