The Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 ranks Mathematical Sciences research at Kent of high quality, with the majority of our research considered world-leading and internationally excellent.
The REF is an internationally recognised system for assessing the quality of research in UK Higher Education Institutions. For each submission, three distinct elements are assessed: the quality of outputs such as publications, their impact beyond academia, and the environment that supports research.
Contributing to the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science‘s REF success was its number of world class publications and the demonstrable impact it has made.
Our Research Environment has been ranked in the top 20 nationally. In addition, 93% of research outputs have been rated as world leading (4*) the highest category internationally excellent (3*).
Overall, 90% of our research has been rated at 3* or 4*.
Professor Stéphane Launois, Head of the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science, said: “I am delighted at our REF2021 results. This is a confirmation that we have an excellent environment for research in Mathematical Sciences where brilliant research is being developed. I am taking this opportunity to congratulate my colleagues for their hard work and dedication.”
