Job description

School of Sport, Exercise & Health Sciences

Full Time Graduate Teaching Assistant, Quantitative Research Methods

Fixed-term for 5-years, or until PhD completion, whichever is sooner.

Only individuals with existing rights to work and study in the UK can be considered as the role does not meet the requirements for Visa sponsorship under UK immigration regulations.

Combining a teaching role with postgraduate research, this PGTA position is an exciting opportunity to complete a PhD under the supervision of Loughborough University’s expert staff while gaining invaluable experience in the delivery of learning and teaching.

This PGTA position sits within the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences at Loughborough University and will support the teaching of research methods and supporting students with statistics.  Teaching roles will include:

  • Holding workshops and drop-ins for students about statistics
  • Demonstrating/Seminars/Tutorials – to undertake laboratory demonstration and/or support teaching activities during seminar, tutorial and practical sessions.
  • Supervision – providing support to academic staff, supervising UG projects through, for example, providing technical support in experiments or assisting students in the use of software.
  • Mentoring/Tutoring – providing students with guidance and technical support for module queries, study skills and referring them to appropriate pastoral support.
  • Highly moderated marking.

Candidates should have a strong, relevant, educational background, excellent communication skills and experience of undertaking a research project.

The PhD topic must fall within the School’s research themes: Sport Performance, Lifestyle for Health and Wellbeing, and Participation in Sport and Exercise.  A list of potential topics can be found here:

Studentship tuition fees will be paid by the University, but no additional studentship stipend will be paid as this position will attract a full-time ‘Specialist & Supporting Academic’ Grade 5 salary (£25,217 – £30,046 per annum). Progression opportunities exist within the post as there is the potential to progress to SSA Grade 6 on gaining Associate Fellow status of the Higher Education Academy (or other such body) and meeting additional criteria after two years of employment.

Informal enquiries should be directed to Dr Emily Petherick, L&T Discipline Group Lead (Research Methods) via email to E.Petherick@lboro.ac.uk
