{"id":892,"date":"2014-11-06T17:28:29","date_gmt":"2014-11-06T17:28:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/smfa-news\/?p=892"},"modified":"2014-11-10T14:43:27","modified_gmt":"2014-11-10T14:43:27","slug":"smfa-fine-art-graduate-wins-the-2014-platform-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/smfa-news\/2014\/11\/06\/smfa-fine-art-graduate-wins-the-2014-platform-award\/","title":{"rendered":"SMFA Fine Art graduate wins the 2014 Platform Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>The School of Music and Fine Art\u00a0 is delighted to announce that Fine Art graduate Sophie Dixon has been awarded the 2014 Platform Award.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/smfa-news\/files\/2014\/11\/Platform_Winner_2014.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-910\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/smfa-news\/files\/2014\/11\/Platform_Winner_2014-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Platform_Winner_2014\" width=\"377\" height=\"251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/smfa-news\/files\/2014\/11\/Platform_Winner_2014-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/smfa-news\/files\/2014\/11\/Platform_Winner_2014.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 377px) 100vw, 377px\" \/>\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Platform Graduate Award winner Sophie Dixon, pictured with Peter Heslip, Director of Visual Art, Arts Council England, and the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\">\n<p>The Platform award is the most\u00a0prestigious\u00a0available\u00a0to a graduating student across the entire south east stretching from Portsmouth to Milton Keynes to Margate.<\/p>\n<p>Five galleries \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aspex.org.uk\/\">Aspex<\/a>, Portsmouth;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dlwp.com\/\">De La Warr Pavilion<\/a>, Bexhill;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.modernartoxford.org.uk\/\">Modern Art Oxford<\/a>;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mkgallery.org\/\">MK Gallery<\/a>, Milton Keynes and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.turnercontemporary.org\/\">Turner Contemporary<\/a>, Margate \u2013 each\u00a0showcased selected work of recent graduates. Through a\u00a0rigorous process of presentation and interview, Sophie was chosen from a final shortlist of 5 graduates and was presented with the Platform award on Saturday at Aspex Gallery by\u00a0Peter Heslip, director of Visual Art, Arts Council England, and the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth. Sophie will\u00a0receive a bursary of \u00a32500 as part of the award together with 12 months of support and mentoring from an experienced art professional.<\/p>\n<p>Sophie\u2019s work was selected by the Turner Contemporary Gallery.\u00a0<em>And Only Fine Threads Hold Us To Each Moment<\/em>, consists of a 50 page book, prints and written text about Srbsk\u00e1, formerly W\u00fcnschendorf, a small village on the Czech Republic\u2019s modern-day border with Poland. The artist\u2019s video installation W\u00fcnschendorf, explores the irreversible changes that the Second World War wrought on the lives of millions, a period of loss and displacement which continues to influence the world in which we live today.<\/p>\n<p>The Platform project is part of School of Music and Fine Art&#8217;s ongoing working partnership with the Turner Contemporary. The award supports graduate professional development and nurtures emerging artists from universities from across the South East region.<\/p>\n<p>School of Music and Fine Art would like to congratulate Sophie on her achievement and thank staff at the Turner Contemporary for their continuing support for our students through Platform and other activities.
