The exhibition is a\u00a0<strong>co-commission\u00a0by The Beaney House of Art &amp; Knowledge and<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitstablebiennale.com\/\"><strong>Whitstable\u00a0Biennale<\/strong><\/a>, a festival of contemporary art.<strong>\u00a0 (<\/strong><strong>The exhibition is also part of the programme of the<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/beacon\/projects\/projections.html\"><strong>University of Kent\u2019s\u00a0International Festival of Projections<\/strong><\/a><strong>, which ran 18 to 20 March 2016.)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Using rare, original magic lantern machines, projection devices invented in the 17th century that used the light of candles and oil lamps to produce\u00a0shows that projected moving\u00a0images for the very first time, and beautiful Victorian\u00a0slides, this unique exhibition by artists Ben Judd, Jordan Baseman, Benedict Drew, Louisa Fairclough, Dryden Goodwin, Haroon Mirza, Lindsay Seers and Guy Sherwin, creates new work especially for\u00a0The Beaney.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2082 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/smfa-news\/files\/2016\/04\/Mask-Filter-Arc-and-sea-sponge-in-case-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Mask Filter Arc and sea sponge in case\" width=\"474\" height=\"316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/smfa-news\/files\/2016\/04\/Mask-Filter-Arc-and-sea-sponge-in-case-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/smfa-news\/files\/2016\/04\/Mask-Filter-Arc-and-sea-sponge-in-case-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/smfa-news\/files\/2016\/04\/Mask-Filter-Arc-and-sea-sponge-in-case-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Adam Chodzko stuns us with images of dust \u2018explosions\u2019 in his work <em>Ask The Dust<\/em>, whilst his second work <em>Mask Filter Arc<\/em> he then combines the Beaney\u2019s Venus Flower Basket with two magic lantern slides, creating a lantern whose intense flashes of light remind us of the process of inspiration and expiration, ugliness and beauty.<\/p>\n<p>Says Adam about <em>Ask the Dust<\/em>: <em>\u201cA slide projector back-projects &#8216;images&#8217; of dust \u2018explosions\u2019 onto a blind in the Explorers and Collectors gallery,sharing this \u2018screen\u2019 with moving patches of sunlight, channelled by a large arched window. The dust silhouettes are formed by tiny particles of debris, decay collected from the barrel of a cannon (captured from the Chinese during the Second Opium War, 1860) stored in the Beaney\u2019s archives. Their apparently random arrangements, suspended in 35mm film slide mounts, now magnified, offer the possibility of being decoded and read, like tea leaves, as premonitions.
