Clarke Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/complit\/staff\/march-russell.html\">Dr Paul March-Russell<\/a>, Specialist Associate Lecturer in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/complit\/index.html\">Department of Comparative Literature<\/a>\u00a0and editor of\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sf-foundation.org\/publications\/index.html\">Foundation: The International Review of Science Fiction<\/a>, <\/em>is on the judging panel for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarkeaward.com\/\">Arthur C. Clarke Award<\/a>\u00a0for science fiction literature for the second year running.<\/p>\n<p>The shortlist for 2018\u00a0has just been announced. The six shortlisted books for the best science-fiction novel published in 2017 are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Robert Cargill, <em>Sea of Rust <\/em>(Gollancz)<\/li>\n<li>Anne Charnock, <em>Dreams Before the Start of Time\u00a0<\/em>(47 North)<\/li>\n<li>Omar El Akkad, <em>American War <\/em>(Picador)<\/li>\n<li>Jaroslav Kalfar, <em>Spaceman of Bohemia\u00a0<\/em>(Sceptre)<\/li>\n<li>Jennie Melamed, <em>Gather the Daughters <\/em>(Tinder Press)<\/li>\n<li>Jeff VanderMeer <em>Borne<\/em> (Fourth Estate).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2018The 2018 shortlist is perhaps one of the most eclectic ever,\u2019 commented Paul on the shortlist, \u2018From a giant flying bear in a post-apocalyptic landscape, to the future of reproductive technology; from an absurdist satire on the meaning of existence, to a dystopian society where paedophilia is a virtue not a sin; and from the prospect of a second American Civil War to a post-human world of scavenging robots and global AIs, this is a list that demonstrates the imaginative possibilities of sf being written today.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The winner will be announced at a public award ceremony held in partnership with Foyles Bookshop, Charing Cross Road, London, on Wednesday 18 July 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Further details of the Arthur C.
