{"id":8427,"date":"2018-03-19T14:11:13","date_gmt":"2018-03-19T14:11:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=8427"},"modified":"2018-03-19T14:11:13","modified_gmt":"2018-03-19T14:11:13","slug":"gordon-lynch-on-the-catholic-churchs-role-in-child-migration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2018\/03\/19\/gordon-lynch-on-the-catholic-churchs-role-in-child-migration\/","title":{"rendered":"Gordon Lynch on the Catholic Church\u2019s role in child migration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/thrs\/news\/index.html?view=8415\">from his research contribution<\/a> to the Government\u2019s Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/thrs\/staff\/lynch.html\">Gordon Lynch<\/a>, Michael Ramsey Professor of Modern Theology in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/thrs\/index.html\">Department of Religious Studies<\/a>, has contributed a piece to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetablet.co.uk\"><em>The Tablet<\/em><\/a> website, the international weekly Catholic journal.<\/p>\n<p>The article, entitled \u2018Why Serious Questions about Catholic Child Migration Need Answers\u2019, builds upon Gordon\u2019s research into child migration in the first half of the twentieth century. In the piece, he argues that the Catholic Church failed to take sufficient care in protecting child migrants from abuse, even by standards of that time.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018There is clearly a somewhat greater recognition in the Church of its failings now,\u2019 Gordon concludes. \u2018The question remains whether this will translate into further action in supporting or compensating former child migrants.
