{"id":8338,"date":"2018-02-26T09:25:06","date_gmt":"2018-02-26T09:25:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=8338"},"modified":"2019-04-10T11:15:34","modified_gmt":"2019-04-10T10:15:34","slug":"writing-history-employabilty-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2018\/02\/26\/writing-history-employabilty-event\/","title":{"rendered":"Alumni and author panel &#8211; Writing History and Getting Published"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As part of the Humanities for Hire employability events, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/\">School of European Culture and Languages<\/a>\u00a0(SECL) is hosting a \u2018Writing History and Getting Published\u2019 event on Thursday 15 March from 5-6pm in the <a href=\"https:\/\/thegulbenkian.co.uk\/?start_date=&amp;end_date=\">Gulbenkian cinema<\/a>. This special Humanities for Hire event will feature Kent alumni who have gone onto successful publishing careers with a focus on history. The event will consist of a panel with a Q&amp;A session, followed by a drinks reception and opportunity for book signing.<\/p>\n<p>Amanda J. Thomas\u00a0is an author, linguist and historian with a particular interest in social and medical history. She is an alumni of the University of Kent, graduating with a degree in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/modern-languages\/undergraduate\/italian\/italian.html\">Italian<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Her books include\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pen-and-sword.co.uk\/Cholera-Hardback\/p\/10951\"><em>Cholera &#8211; The Victorian Plague<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(Pen &amp; Sword History, 2015),<em>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcfarlandbooks.com\/book-2.php?id=978-0-7864-3989-8\">The Lambeth Cholera Outbreak of 1848-1849: The Setting, Causes, Course and Aftermath of an Epidemic in London<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(McFarland, 2009); she also contributed to Dr Andrew Hann&#8217;s\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victoriacountyhistory.ac.uk\/counties\/kent\/volumes\/medway-valley-kent-landscape-transformed\">The Medway Valley: A Kent Landscape Transformed<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(Victoria County History, 2009).<\/p>\n<p>Her broadcast work includes\u00a0<em>The Flying Archaeologist<\/em>\u00a0(BBC4, 2012),\u00a0<em>Who Do You Think You Are?<\/em>\u00a0(Wall to Wall Media\/BBC1, 2012-13), and\u00a0<em>The One Show<\/em> (BBC, 2016). Amanda is also editor of the historical journal,\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/foma-lsc.org\/journal.html\">The Clock Tower<\/a><\/em>, for The Friends of Medway Archives and Local Studies Centre, and editorial consultant to\u00a0<em>Harpendia<\/em>\u00a0magazine.<\/p>\n<p>Her next book will be\u00a0<em>The Non-Conformist Revolution<\/em>\u00a0(Pen &amp; Sword History, forthcoming).<\/p>\n<p>Dr Simon Elliott\u00a0is an author, historian, archaeologist and Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Kent where he studied for his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/classics\/postgraduate\/research-classical-archaeological-studies.html\">PhD in Classical &amp; Archaeological Studies <\/a>on the subject of the Roman military in Britain. He is a trustee of the Council for British Archaeology.<\/p>\n<p>He published his first book,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehistorypress.co.uk\/publication\/sea-eagles-of-empire\/9780750966023\/\">Sea Eagles of Empire: The Classis Britannica and the Battles for Britain<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(History Press, 2016) while still studying for his doctorate. The book subsequently won<em>\u00a0Military History Magazine<\/em>&#8216;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.military-history.org\/slider\/mhm-book-awards-winners-announced.htm\">Book of the Year Award<\/a>.
