{"id":8313,"date":"2018-01-31T15:38:49","date_gmt":"2018-01-31T15:38:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=8313"},"modified":"2018-01-31T15:42:47","modified_gmt":"2018-01-31T15:42:47","slug":"laura-bailey-discusses-new-words-in-the-oed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2018\/01\/31\/laura-bailey-discusses-new-words-in-the-oed\/","title":{"rendered":"Laura Bailey discusses new words in the OED"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/ell\/staff\/bailey.html\">Dr Laura Bailey<\/a>, Lecturer in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/ell\/index.html\">Department of English Language &amp; Linguistics<\/a>, was interviewed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/p001d714\">Dominic King<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/radiokent\">BBC Radio Kent<\/a> yesterday, Tuesday 30 January, to discuss the revelation that 1,000 new words have been added to the Oxford English Dictionary this week, including \u2018mansplaining\u2019 and \u2018ransomware\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The dictionary is very cautious about what words they add,\u2019 explains Laura in the programme, \u2018so these have been around a little while before they actually get into the dictionary.
