{"id":7988,"date":"2017-10-16T10:33:52","date_gmt":"2017-10-16T09:33:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=7988"},"modified":"2017-10-16T10:36:08","modified_gmt":"2017-10-16T09:36:08","slug":"paul-march-russell-on-ecocriticism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2017\/10\/16\/paul-march-russell-on-ecocriticism\/","title":{"rendered":"Paul March-Russell on ecocriticism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/complit\/staff\/march-russell.html\">Dr Paul March-Russell<\/a>, Specialist Associate Lecturer in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/complit\/index.html\">Department of Comparative Literature<\/a>, will be giving the keynote speech at the third <a href=\"https:\/\/ncomplitnetwork.wordpress.com\">Northern Comparative Literature Network<\/a> symposium to be held at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birmingham.ac.uk\/index.aspx\">University of Birmingham<\/a> on 28 October 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The symposium, entitled &#8216;Of Borders and Ecologies: Comparative Literature and the Environment\u2019\u00a0will bring together scholars working on questions of the Environment and its representation in Comparative and World Literature.<\/p>\n<p>Paul\u2019s paper is titled \u2018Combined and Uneven Developments: World Literature and Ecocriticism\u2019. He will respond to the Warwick Research Collective\u2019s \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.warwick.ac.uk\/fac\/arts\/english\/research\/currentprojects\/collective\/rfp\/\">Towards a New Theory of World-Literature<\/a>\u2019 published in 2015.\u00a0 The authors argued that world literature must be undergirded by a Marxist analysis that proffers a world-historical view of the unevenness in economic and cultural production, exemplifying their argument by making comparisons with Franco Moretti\u2019s application of Immanuel Wallerstein\u2019s theory of world systems to literary development, and to the application of Energy Studies to literary analysis Paul will broadly accept their argument but will also contend that their criticism of Comparative Literature is misplaced.\u00a0 Instead, he will show, via an analysis of how the discipline emerged, that their real target is the traditional Marxist <em>bete noire <\/em>of Formalism.\u00a0 He will argue that Comparative Literature has already evolved beyond its Formalist inheritance and that part of this evolution has involved an engagement with Marxism.<\/p>\n<p>Attendance at the conference is free, but places are limited.
