{"id":7702,"date":"2017-08-11T16:50:00","date_gmt":"2017-08-11T15:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=7702"},"modified":"2017-08-11T16:50:00","modified_gmt":"2017-08-11T15:50:00","slug":"graeme-forbes-in-the-philosophers-magazine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2017\/08\/11\/graeme-forbes-in-the-philosophers-magazine\/","title":{"rendered":"Graeme Forbes in The Philosophers\u2019 Magazine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/philosophy\/staff\/forbes.html\">Dr Graeme Forbes<\/a>, \u00a0Lecturer in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/philosophy\/index.html\">Department of Philosophy<\/a>, has written a feature article for the latest issue of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.philosophersmag.com\/\"><em>The Philosophers\u2019 Magazine<\/em><\/a>, Issue 78, July-September 2017.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Philosophers\u2019 Magazine <\/em>is dedicated to publishing clear, thought-provoking work from professional philosophers.<\/p>\n<p>Graeme\u2019s article is titled \u2018\u00a0Are We In A Simulation?\u2019, and asks fellow philosophers <a href=\"https:\/\/as.nyu.edu\/content\/nyu-as\/as\/faculty\/david-chalmers.html\">Professor David Chalmers<\/a> (Center for Mind, Brain, and Consciousness at New York University), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/philo\/profiles\/michaela-mcsweeney\/\">Professor Michaela McSweeney<\/a> (Boston University of Arts and Science) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leeds.ac.uk\/arts\/profile\/20042\/1523\/darren_bradley\">Dr Darren Bradley<\/a> (University of Leeds) think about the possibility that we\u2019re stuck in an artificial cyberspace.<\/p>\n<p>After evaluating the various arguments that this may or may not be the case, Graeme concludes: \u2018As a sceptical hypothesis, the idea that this is all a simulation is meant to be less radical than a denial of the external world.
