{"id":7563,"date":"2017-06-22T11:20:31","date_gmt":"2017-06-22T10:20:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=7563"},"modified":"2017-06-28T11:17:22","modified_gmt":"2017-06-28T10:17:22","slug":"open-event-of-the-search-for-justice-in-peru","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2017\/06\/22\/open-event-of-the-search-for-justice-in-peru\/","title":{"rendered":"Open event of the search for justice in Peru"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/modern-languages\/index.html\">Department of Modern Languages<\/a>\u00a0is pleased be hosting an event on \u2018Forced Sterilisations in Peru and the Search for Justice\u2019, sponsored by the Canterbury branch of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucu.org.uk\">University and College Union<\/a> (UCU) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/law\/kentclgs\/\">Kent Centre for Law Gender and Sexuality<\/a>, following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/modern-languages\/news\/index.html?view=7485\">a successful presentation on the subject at Amnesty International in London<\/a>. The event will be held on Wednesday 28 June at 5pm.<\/p>\n<p>The event will feature human rights defender Esperanza Huayama, president of the Association of Forcibly Sterilised Women from the region of Huancabamba in Piura, who will be speaking about her experience in seeking justice and reparation.<\/p>\n<p>Between 1996 and 1998, some 200,000 women and around 30,000 men were forcefully sterilised, many without their consent or understanding what the procedure meant for their fertility. The victims have been campaigning for justice and reparation for two decades.
