{"id":7394,"date":"2017-05-31T12:13:25","date_gmt":"2017-05-31T11:13:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=7394"},"modified":"2017-05-31T12:13:25","modified_gmt":"2017-05-31T11:13:25","slug":"reshmi-dutta-flanders-on-crime-narratives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2017\/05\/31\/reshmi-dutta-flanders-on-crime-narratives\/","title":{"rendered":"Reshmi Dutta-Flanders on crime narratives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/ell\/staff\/dutta-flanders.html\">Dr Reshmi Dutta-Flanders<\/a>, Honorary Research Fellow in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/ell\/index.html\">Department of English Language &amp; Linguistics<\/a>, will be presenting at the 9th Discourse, Communication and the Enterprise conference (DICOEN9) to be held at Aston University, 22-24 June 2017<\/p>\n<p>Reshmi\u2019s paper is entitled,\u2019 The \u2018Why\u2019 Behind the \u2018What\u2019 in a Crime Narrative: An Applied Approach\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>There is great deal of research on the structure of narrative and its mode and on the narrative positioning and counter positioning of the actor in legal and social contexts. In offender narratives, personal experiences are embedded for observation and analysis of particular realities that contextualise a disposition of the perpetrator being a victim of circumstances, \u2018an undergoer\u2019 rather than an \u2018effector\u2019 of actions, evaluated in the shift from narrated action to speaker utterance in prospection and in anticipation of the criminal act.<\/p>\n<p>Using techniques from systemic functional linguistics and narratology, Reshmi will use examples from Tony Parker\u2019s book <em>Life After Life: Interviews with Twelve Murderers<\/em> (1990) to cultivate an effective approach for the search of personal themes underlying the act of crime.\u00a0 Based on personal circumstances and experiences, this is the \u2018story of intentionality\u2019 in crime narratives, characteristically structured as the first story of crime and the second story of investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Reshmi will be presenting on Friday 23 June.<\/p>\n<p>DICOEN9 aims to promote and foster interaction between those interested in discourse and communication in organizational settings, and follows a series of successful conferences held alternate years.
