{"id":7367,"date":"2017-05-25T12:32:52","date_gmt":"2017-05-25T11:32:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=7367"},"modified":"2017-05-25T12:32:52","modified_gmt":"2017-05-25T11:32:52","slug":"call-for-papers-play-recreation-and-experimentation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2017\/05\/25\/call-for-papers-play-recreation-and-experimentation\/","title":{"rendered":"Call for papers: \u2018Play, Recreation, and Experimentation\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/complit\/staff\/li.html\">Dr Xiaofan\u00a0Amy Li<\/a>, Lecturer in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/complit\/index.html\">Department of Comparative Literature<\/a>, is co-organising a conference on \u2018Play, Recreation, and Experimentation: Literature and the Arts\u00a0since the Early Modern Times\u2019, with <a href=\"http:\/\/humanities.exeter.ac.uk\/modernlanguages\/staff\/htaylor\/\">Dr Helena Taylor<\/a> (University of Exeter), to be held at Kent on 8-9 December 2017.<\/p>\n<p>This interdisciplinary conference aims to explore relations between play, recreation, and\u00a0experimentation by examining their articulations in literature and the arts (broadly understood as\u00a0the visual arts, architecture, music\/sound art, film) from the early modern period up to the present day.<\/p>\n<p>There are\u00a0many instances of engagement with the ludic and experimentation, e.g. early modern literature on\u00a0the theme of playing with appearances (being and seeming); Duchamp&#8217;s <em>Fontaine<\/em>; Dada and\u00a0Surrealist practices including <em>cadavre exquis<\/em>, collage, bricolage; Oulipo and pataphysics;\u00a0postmodern pastiches and hybridity in architecture, and re-inventions of myth and history in\u00a0contemporary fiction. Nevertheless, we intend to shed new light on these works and probe their\u00a0implications for a theory of the ludic through considering the interactions and dialogues between\u00a0play, recreation, and experimentation.<\/p>\n<p>Proposals are sought for 20-minute papers.
