{"id":7358,"date":"2017-05-12T12:55:18","date_gmt":"2017-05-12T11:55:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=7358"},"modified":"2018-08-30T16:23:06","modified_gmt":"2018-08-30T15:23:06","slug":"alexander-von-humboldt-award-for-ian-cooper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2017\/05\/12\/alexander-von-humboldt-award-for-ian-cooper\/","title":{"rendered":"Alexander von Humboldt award for Ian Cooper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/modern-languages\/staff\/cooper.html\">Dr Ian Cooper<\/a>, Lecturer in German in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/modern-languages\/index.html\">Department of Modern Languages<\/a>, has been awared an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humboldt-foundation.de\/web\/home.html\">Alexander von Humboldt Foundation<\/a> grant to host\u00a0a colloquium entitled \u2018Celan and Heidegger Fifty Years after Todtnauberg\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting between the poet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Paul-Celan\">Paul Celan<\/a> and philosopher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Martin-Heidegger-German-philosopher\">Martin Heidegger<\/a> on 27 July 1967, at Heidegger\u2019s mountain retreat near the Black Forest village of Todtnauberg, is one of the seminal literary and intellectual encounters of the twentieth century, and continues to be the subject of intense speculation and debate. While the various, and widely differing, imaginative and reconstructive attempts to define what exactly was discussed by the two men that day are essentially exercises in conjecture, the core historical tension of the meeting is not a speculative matter: namely, Celan\u2019s need to hear from Heidegger, with whose philosophy he had a deep and appreciative familiarity, some account of the thinker\u2019s involvements during the years of the Third Reich. The meeting at Todtnauberg has acquired the symbolic aura of a history-laden encounter between the Jewish poet and former National Socialist philosopher.<\/p>\n<p>The 50<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary, in 2017, of the \u2018event\u2019 of Todtnauberg may be seen as an occasion to consider in greater depth than has been usual the intellectual and imaginative currents shaping the relationship between Celan\u2019s work and Heidegger\u2019s.
