{"id":7077,"date":"2017-03-02T11:19:15","date_gmt":"2017-03-02T11:19:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=7077"},"modified":"2017-03-02T11:58:55","modified_gmt":"2017-03-02T11:58:55","slug":"eleni-kapogianni-on-irony-and-sarcasm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2017\/03\/02\/eleni-kapogianni-on-irony-and-sarcasm\/","title":{"rendered":"Eleni Kapogianni on irony and sarcasm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/ell\/staff\/kapogianni.html\">Dr Eleni Kapogianni<\/a>, Lecturer in Linguistics in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/ell\/index.html\">Department of English Language &amp; Linguistics<\/a>, will be guest speaker at the International Institute of Korean Studies colloquium, to be held at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uclan.ac.uk\/\">University of Central Lancashire<\/a> (UCLAN) on Wednesday 8 March 2017, with a talk entitled \u2018Language-Specific, Culture-Specific, and Universal Characteristics of Irony and Sarcasm&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>The use of irony comes so naturally that it is reasonable to suppose that it is a universal human skill. Studies on genetically and culturally distant languages indicate that &#8211; sarcastic and non-sarcastic &#8211; irony is indeed omnipresent.\u00a0\u00a0What hasn\u2019t been investigated extensively, however, is which features of irony are truly inherent to its nature (therefore universal) and which are language- and culture-sensitive. In her talk, Eleni will focus mainly on Korean and English, reviewing existing data and analyses that provide clues on three culture-specific issues of (a) the boundary between sarcastic and non-sarcastic irony, (b) the use of self-irony and positive-irony, (c) the relationship between irony and (im)politeness. In order to further the discussion on language-specific versus universal characteristics of irony, she will also present preliminary findings from a survey investigating speakers\u2019 intuitions about the use of irony in 12 selected languages.<\/p>\n<p>The talk is scheduled for 3pm.
