{"id":6888,"date":"2017-01-27T14:30:40","date_gmt":"2017-01-27T14:30:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=6888"},"modified":"2017-01-27T14:30:40","modified_gmt":"2017-01-27T14:30:40","slug":"new-humanist-interviews-lois-lee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2017\/01\/27\/new-humanist-interviews-lois-lee\/","title":{"rendered":"New Humanist interviews Lois Lee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/thrs\/staff\/lee.html\">Dr Lois Lee<\/a>, Research Fellow in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/thrs\/index.html\">Department of Religious Studies<\/a>, featured on the <a href=\"https:\/\/newhumanist.org.uk\"><em>New Humanist<\/em><\/a> website earlier in the month, in an interview published 4 January 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The interview, entitled \u2018What Does It Mean To Be Non-Religious in the Modern Era?\u2019, discussed Lois\u2019s book <a href=\"https:\/\/global.oup.com\/academic\/product\/recognizing-the-non-religious-9780198736844?cc=gb&amp;lang=en&amp;\"><em>Recognizing the Non-religious: Reimagining the Secular<\/em><\/a> (Oxford University Press, 2015).<\/p>\n<p>The <em>New Humanist<\/em> is a quarterly magazine published by the Rationalist Association, with an expanded online section where the interview appears.<\/p>\n<p>Lois\u2019s research focuses on the social structures and cultures of non-religious people. \u2018What I\u2019m trying to argue throughout my book is that we need to be a lot more precise about what we mean by these kinds of terms, and that there are important differences between what it means to be \u201cnon-religious\u201d and what it means to be \u201csecular\u201d\u2019, explains Lois in the interview.<\/p>\n<p>Lois also discusses her current research programme, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/thrs\/news\/index.html?view=6948\">Understanding Unbelief<\/a>, which examines the variety of\u00a0\u00a0different beliefs held by\u00a0so-called &#8216;unbelievers&#8217;.
