{"id":6731,"date":"2016-11-23T10:44:57","date_gmt":"2016-11-23T10:44:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/?p=6731"},"modified":"2016-11-23T10:44:57","modified_gmt":"2016-11-23T10:44:57","slug":"phd-student-on-swearing-on-bbc-radio-kent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.kent.ac.uk\/secl-news-events\/2016\/11\/23\/phd-student-on-swearing-on-bbc-radio-kent\/","title":{"rendered":"PhD student on swearing on BBC Radio Kent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Vicky Ward, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/ell\/postgraduate\/research-linguistics.html\">PhD in Linguistics<\/a> student in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/ell\/index.html\">Department of English Language &amp; Linguistics<\/a>, was interviewed on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/p009v85c\">Julia George<\/a> programme on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/radiokent\">BBC Radio Kent<\/a> earlier in the month about research on the levels of swearing by women.<\/p>\n<p>The topic is relevant to Vicky\u2019s research, with her thesis provisionally titled &#8216;Obscene Language: A Diachronic Perspective&#8217;, under the supervision of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kent.ac.uk\/secl\/ell\/staff\/hornsby.html\">Dr David Hornsby<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Countering the interviewer\u2019s sensationalism with some common sense, Vicky pragmatically states in the interview: \u2018I don\u2019t think there\u2019s any reason why women should swear less than men.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The programme was broadcast on 8 November.
